Did you know that each airline company has baggage allowance rules that passengers are expected to be aware of? It's a good idea to become familiar with each airline's policy regarding baggage, unless of course you simply enjoy last minute change of plans, stress-related migraines and the old pastime of arguing with airline personnel.
Alaska and American
Alaska Airlines has a policy that states that two items are allowed as carry ons—one bag and one personal item. The limit includes all laptop computers, briefcases and backpacks. The item has a maximum measurement of 17 x 11 x 9 inches.
American Airline has the same policy, 1 bag and one personal items allowed as carryon luggage. The maximum size allowable is 45 linear inches, and the item must be able to fit within the size box at the gate. The luggage weight limit is 40 pounds. This airline does also list exclusions including normal sized purses, coats, and disability items such as canes or walkers.
America West and Continental
America West has a limit of two bags per person and a maximum size of 45 linear inches; or 9 x 13 x 23. There is no specifications on weight limits, provided the item is a reasonable weight. Therefore luggage wheels or other bulky bags that still fall within the acceptable measurements are allowable. The company also has exclusions on all handbags, which are not considered bags.
Continental Airlines has a limit of one carryon bag per person, within 45 inches and not to exceed 40 pounds. Exclusions include purses, computers, business cases and small duffel bags.
